For centuries, the indigenous people of Guatemala have produced extraordinary masks that show display the varied and colorful expressions of their culture that play an essential part in Guatemalan ritual, dances, drama, fertility rites, planting cycles and religious ceremonies. Over time they have undergone numerous adaptations in the ways they are made, what they represent and how they are used. Masks continue to play an important role in ceremonies, rituals and performances today, such as dances rooted in Mayan tradition where animal masks are often used.
